A blog that I MUST share in my own blog compares the affects of technology to a child story in which the dangers of technology lead to very bad consequences. Magic Geox is a superhero that must save the world from the evil sneakers who were first created to accommodate humans and their needs, well to help get rid of smelly feet, but nonetheless the experiments go wrong and the world goes under attack. The evil sneakers are meant to represent technology and the industrial revolution because of its negative affects in the environment. Technology first started off as a harmless piece of luxury but grew into a destructive power. Like Feed, these stories try to put emphasis on affects of technology on society. Even though Magic Geox is a cartoon, Feed is a novel that was written for teenagers. In a world that is now surrounded by technology the youth are the being targeted right now to stop any future harm to the planet and society if technology continues to digest our culture and world.

Google is launching a new communication tool known as Wave. Wave will be a hybrid for many of the tools that we use today like email, instant messaging, and wiki’s. What wave offers is the ability to have a more enhanced experience when talking to other people on the web. You can add as many people as you want to a conversation and new users can see what was previously said. The characters in the words that are you typing will show up on your friends screen even before you click “submit”. They also allow the opportunity to edit comments that you already submitted earlier in the conversation and add pictures, and videos. This form of communication is much more advanced when compared to the simple email and instant messaging conversation that we are used to. To learn more about it you can visit http://wave.google.com/ where they have a 90 minute video that goes in depth about Wave’s function. When I first heard about Google Wave I thought about Feed because of the advancements of communications that is being created by today’s society. Wave can look like a new tool, but it is a sign of technology changing the way people communicate. It is lessening human contact and leading to a world that is close to the one in Feed.

People can define the concept of exchange in many ways. It can be seen as the interaction between people and their environment, or between people and places. In the dystopian novel Feed M.T. Anderson describes the world he believes will resurrect if the lifestyles of today were to continue. Society today is very much different to what it was fifty years ago. Today the technological devices that are being introduced are transforming the culture and people are becoming more dependable on it. The amount of technology that are being created today is overwhelming and the amount of attention that society gives it is not healthy because of the implications that it will have on society. Another issue that M.T Anderson puts emphasis on in Feed is the amount of ignorance that people have when it comes to issues that affects the world. He puts shame to society for their foolish ignorant behavior when it comes to serious matters like destruction of their own health and the world around them. Through Feed, M.T. Anderson was able to allegorically scrutinize society’s current dependence on advancing technology as well as their ignorant behavior to global issues by highlighting the extreme affects of their behavior by showing how it could inevitably lead to the deterioration of society.

The exchange between society and technology today is very much different to what it used to be a few decades ago. The advancements that are being introduced today have led to many changes within society and lifestyles. Years back technology was considered a luxury, now it is a commodity. People need technology to get through the day. Cell phones are much more then a communication tool, people use it to get directions, keep their days organized, and use it for occupational reasons. People have their whole worlds in their mobile phones. Feed is set in this world about two hundred years from now and almost all the characters, at most the teenagers in this story, have had a chip installed in their brains at the time of their birth. This chip enables them to both surf the internet and chat with people with out doing it orally. This feed syncs itself into the persons personality and advertises the latest in fashion, gossip, and culture. But the characters in this story do not know about the implications that the feed is having away at their bodies. It is slowly eating them away to the point that they have lesions covering their bodies and their skin slowly deteriorates to the point where the protagonists mother had her teeth exposed even when her mouth was closed. But their dependence on the feed since birth enabled the feed to make them accept what was happening to them as well as control every aspect in their life, as well as every decision. It was able to tell a person, through their personality and previous actions, what sort of product they should buy and it would also be able to tell them what they were feeling and use that to push a product that they guaranteed would help them. Since the Feed controls parts of the brain, the protagonist love interest, Violet, had died because her feed had flawed the functions of her brain taking away motor abilities and her memories. It is with time and the advancements of technology that people will allow for the technology to control their bodies.

In an article published by USA today, it was said by psychologist that technology today had placed the youth in a “bubble” in which their morals and communication skills are different to that of adults. The article argued that the social lives of the youth is revolving more and more around technology because they grew up with the internet, iPods, and social networking sites. Studies have shown that the morals and social norms that kids find acceptable have changed from the 1950’s to now. The technology is changing the lifestyles of people and since today’s youth were exposed to it at a much younger age then current adults their resistant and hesitation to such technologies would not be as great. The same can be seen in Feed because the Feed was placed into their heads at birth and they were never shown a world without it. Their whole existence and personality has been molded by the feed and with out it they would have nothing. Violet was the only teenage character who did not have the feed since birth and because of that she had a different view on the world and her bluntness about the ridiculous and controlling aspects of the Feed is seen in her. Her voice and position in the book can be seen as the voice of reason because she was the only one who questioned the Feed as well as knew how it worked to get people to buy certain products. She questioned the holes in answers to questions about the world around them. The teens in the novel were so consumed by products and what was considered “in” that they completely ignored the world around them and the disappearance of towns and starving people in the world. “When you have the feed all your life, you’re brought up to think about things. Like them never telling you that it’s a republic and not a democracy. It something that makes me angry, what people don’t know about today…” (113). M.T. Anderson was trying to portray in his dystopian novel the ignorance of certain global issues that people are being blinded from today. Advertisements and commercialism changes the way people talk and look and people do not notice it happening. People know the harm of using certain products like cigarettes and drugs but they continue using it because movies and advertisements give it an image of being sophisticated and cool. People know the harm of dumping waste and burning fossil fuels but they continue doing it because of the world’s need for products and automobiles.

The exchange that people have with technology is blinding them from the real world and issues that people used to consider important like the environment. Technology is creating a new culture that disregards any consequences to their actions. With the incoming wave of bigger and better technology society is shying away from the humanistic ideals and morals of the older generations. Violet’s father does not have the feed in his brain so he sees how destructed and corrupted the world had become. He saw the transformation from a world with the feed to one with out it and has had his family die and suffers from it. By allegorically showing the affects of the technology in the future Anderson was able scrutinize the behavior of modern society as being shallow, extravagant, and ignorant. In this article M.T Anderson says that he wrote this novel for teenagers and simplified many of the issues that America is dealing with today because since they are the future of this country they could do something about it.

When I think of the future of this country or view what other people see in the near future, I am very surprised to see people all agree on similiar ideas. They all agreed that the technology that will be present in the future will be much more advanced and utilized by society. Although their perspectives can be sometimes obscene like flying cars and free trips to the moon, it makes you wonder about how long it would take for society to be able to create such mechanics. Ten years ago I remember beepers being the “must have communication tool”, now newer and more advanced devices, software’s, and tools come out every month and made public to the people. In this website I found when I Googled “technological advances” they make assumptions about what they believe will happen in the future as well as the type of technology that will be created. Although this website may look a bit childish and may look like a hoax, the predictions that they make about the future and technologies affect on it could be seen as valid. Some people are arguing today that the advancements in technology had contributed to our current recession so it can be said that it might also affect religion and greater environmental decline in the future.

I was really surprised when I came across this website www.ieet.org because this website contains both articles and blogs that studies and debates the effects of technology on society. Issues that are debated on in this website are the ethical issues as well as the future of technology. This website looks at both the negative and positive affects of having a culture whose technological advances are becoming more and more utilized. Their mission is to encourage the concept of “technoprogressivism”. They believe that technological progress can be positive for human development as long as the technology is safe. They believe that their technoprogressive ideas can increase “freedom, happiness, and human flourishing in democratic societies.” They even had an article that discussed the nature of of the book
Feed and the role that technology had on society when utilized in unsafe manners. I would not say that I completely agree with their ideas of embracing the advancements of technology because when I look at how much change technology has gone through in the past ten years, the amount of change present in Feed could be inevitable.

Blogging is a whole new world to me. It’s fascinating and intriguing to see people write to their own accord and have it exposed to the whole world. I have no doubt that when blogging first came out it was not accepted as ‘real’ writing by academics and journalist but with time it slowly was accepted as a new culture. It’s used spread gossip, politics, and other forms of current events. I also find it very funny that every time that I type the word “blog” into a word document Word can not identify it and doesn’t consider it a real word. My Humanities course at the University of Chicago involves writing on a blog created by my professor. This blog was created with the intention of looking at the world of exchange and see how it can be seen in the most influential and thought provoking pieces of literature like A Raisin in the Sun, Songs of Innocence and Experience, and Feed. I decided to focus my attention on the dystopian Novel Feed, where M.T. Anderson decides to allegorically critique the future of the world if the life styles and cultures and the current global issues that are being ignored today continue.
